Chanukah got off to an early start when Rabbi Pinchus Feldman lit all eight candles at a special ceremony in the NSW Parliament.

The event, co-hosted by the Sydney Yeshiva and the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, was attended by many NSW State politicians as well as Federal members Michael Danby and Josh Frydenberg together with NSW Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells.

During his speech preceding the lighting of the candles the Yeshiva’s Rabbi Feldman recited a special prayer for the victims of the Philippine typhoon as well as victims of other disasters around the globe.

Speakers included Premier Barry O’Farrell, Leader of the Opposition John Robertson, President of the NSW Legislative Council Don Harwin, Speaker of the NSW Legislative Assembly Shelley Hancock and President of the NSWJBD Yair Miller.

In his address, Premier Barry O’Farrell reaffirmed Don Harwin’s statement that the NSW Parliament was the oldest in Australia and effectively where modern-day Australia began. He said that Chanukah not only represented a story of multiculturalism but also one of multi-faith. He added: “The story of the Jewish people is a story of survival. Your values, the values of Judaism, underpin Western society.”

He told a WWII story from Holland which he described as “a Chanukah miracle”. He said: “A young woman who had survived too many pograms decided to flee and to change her name and pretend she was Christian in order to survive the war.The good news is that she did. The bad news is that she left her home by train with a package packed for her by her sister on the eve of Chanukah with all the usual Chanukah treats including latkes. As she was sitting in the train with part of her luggage a Gestapo officer walked into the carriage and she suddenly realised that within her luggage was something that would disclose her religion…something that could have ultimately have lead to her death. As she worried about this a young girl who was eating an apple, spat the apple out and as luck would have it, like a miracle of Chanukah, the Gestapo officer slipped on the apple and knocked himself out and was carried out of the carriage.”

There just had to be a Holohoax miracle involved somewhere along the line! Hahaha!!

“Your values, the values of Judaism, underpin Western society.” – There you go. Straight from the Premier’s mouth! The modern “West” most certainly is a Jewified culture, that’s for sure.

Frydenberg sworn in as Abbott’s go-to man

JEWISH Liberal MP Josh Frydenberg has described his appointment as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister as a “real privilege”.

A rising star in the party, the Member for Kooyong in Victoria was sworn in, along with the rest of Abbott’s inaugural ministry, yesterday (Wednesday).

Frydenberg is just the second Jewish Liberal parliamentarian to serve in a government after Peter Baume, who held a number of ministerial positions in the early 1980s under Malcolm Fraser.

Speaking to The AJN prior to the ceremony, Frydenberg said the appointment was unexpected.

“We’ve worked hard over the last three years, and it is terrific that Tony Abbott and the team have been elected to government,” he said.

“To get the call yesterday was a real thrill and to be Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister will be a real privilege.”

He added that he was “very conscious of the workload” in the role, where he’ll have a particular responsibility for the government’s deregulation agenda.

“That’s the Coalition’s commitment, to cut $1 billion a year in red and green tape, to create a more efficient government and more productive businesses,” he explained.

“And so that will be a real focus for me, an economic focus that is important for the country.”

Australia: We have a Jewish Problem!

AN attack on a landmark declaration against anti-Semitism appears to have backfired, with more than 50 Coalition MPs signing the historic document this week.

The London Declaration on Combating Anti-Semitism, signed by Prime Minister Julia Gillard on April 23, the first Australian parliamentarian to do so, was blasted this week by Sydney academic Professor Stuart Rees. Rees is a council member of the University of Sydney’s Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, which supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. The centre last year tried to stop the university’s Israel Research Forum, which brought together Israeli and Australian academics to share research.

The academic’s tirade came after senior Liberal frontbencher Christopher Pyne signed the declaration, already signed by 125 parliamentarians globally.

“Recently, the University of Sydney was plagued by anti-Israel activists promoting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel,” said Pyne as he signed the declaration.

“Activism, boycotts and sometimes sanctions campaigns aren’t always anti-Semitic, but when you target individual businesses because they are Jewish, it is clearly anti-Semitic.

In an email obtained by The Australian, Rees slammed Pyne’s comments as “the usual childish, thoughtless but easily populist response”.

Asked if his comments also applied to the Prime Minister, he replied: “Of course”.

“The resort to charges of anti-Semitism regarding the worldwide criticisms of the internationally illegal policies of the government of Israel is an age-old technique to stifle any criticism of blatant human rights abuses,” Rees said.

Liberal MP Josh Frydenberg (this ones a Jew by the way… BDL1983) responded by asking a group of Coalition MPs to sign the declaration. After Question Time on Tuesday, dozens of MPs, including Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, followed Pyne’s example. Key Coalition senators were also set to sign it this week.

Describing the wave of support for the declaration as “fantastic”, Frydenberg told The AJN: “The declaration is an important document which shines a light on the resurgence of anti-Semitism worldwide while outlining a series of practical measures to counter this scourge. Only with the efforts of free thinking, community-minded individuals and governments representing both sides of the political divide can we take the united action necessary to build tolerance and understanding in our society.”

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus, who was among a number of Labor MPs who also signed the declaration, said the PM was acting in the interests of the country. “The Prime Minister represented our nation, our government and the parliamentary Labor Party when she signed the London Declaration Combating Anti-Semitism,” he said.
